Regent Park is a 69-acre housing complex in the centre of Toronto, originally built in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In 1995, tenants approached Toronto Community Housing (TCHC), asking for change. This was the start of what has become a globally recognized revitalization project.

In 2003, Toronto’s City Council approved the Revitalization of Regent Park. In 2006, TCHC selected the Daniels Corporation to build the first three phases of the five-phase development. Daniels is currently constructing Phase 3 with an estimated completion date of 2023.

In 2020, TCHC selected Tridel as its developer partner for the final two phases of Regent Park’s revitalization, phases 4 and 5.

Community engagement has been central to the Regent Park revitalization to date, with resident input key to the development of the rezoning application submitted to the City of Toronto in April 2022, and resubmitted December 2022, and April 2023, in line with the City’s rezoning application approval process. The rezoning application was approved by City Council in July 2023.

In early 2022, TCHC and Tridel began conversations with the Regent Park community to determine how to invest the community benefits valued at $26.8 million that came with Tridel’s proposal for Phases 4 and 5, to help with the social and economic transformation of the neighbourhood. In May 2022, TCHC formed the Community Benefits Oversight Working Group (CBOWG) following a recruitment process.

This advisory body made up of a diverse group of Regent Park residents (and supported by four non-voting representatives from local agencies and subject matter experts) co-designed a community engagement process with TCHC and Tridel, facilitated by Monumental Consulting. The process to collect resident feedback was launched on April 26, and a community vote to select a community benefits package and formalize the Community Benefits Agreement between TCHC and Tridel will be held in 2025.
